Abstract

814,088. Simulating church bells; electric selective signalling systems. SCHULMERICH ELECTRONICS Inc. May 17, 1955, No. 14236/55. Classes 13, 40 (.1), 88 (1) and 88 (2). A church bell is simulated by a rod struck by a plunger, the sound being picked up by a microphone, amplified, and fed to a loudspeaker. A tolling bell is simulated by the operation of a high-tone striker, a swinging bell by the alternate operation of high- and low-tone strikers. A programme of striking is controlled by clock-driven discs controlling switches, relays, and a motor-driven selector. Tone generator, Fig. 3. A flat strip 137, grooved at 150, as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,582,441, is fixed at one end to a post 139, supported by a block 138. The strip can be struck by low- or high-tone strikers 226, 227, energized respectively by coils 198, 189. The block 138 is mounted on rubber bushes'. The sound from the strip is picked up by a microphone 144, fed to an amplifier and so to a loudspeaker. Automatic Angelus strike. Knob 160 is set to central position. When an off-set key on a front programme clock-driven disc, Fig. 6, closes switch N and another clock-driven switch M, Fig. 2, closes then relay R1 energizes to turn on the amplifier 184 and start coder motor 178. The inner contact finger 186 is slightly behind the outer contact finger 185. A pulse over inner contact 7 energizes relay R3. Pulses over outer contacts 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 26, 27, 28 and 33--41 energize high-tone striker coil 189 so that the apparatus functions as a tolling bell with a sequance 3-3-3-9. A pulse over inner contact 44 restores R1 to shut off the amplifier, the motor continuing to run to home position when off-normal contacts 177 open. Week-day automatic swinging bell. For a swinging bell strike switch E is operated. When a front disc straight pin has closed switch P and switch M has also closed, then relay R2 pulls up to start. the coder motor 178., A pulse over inner contact 2 energizes R1. A pulse over inner contact 7 energizes low-tone striker coil 198. As the outer contact finger reaches contact 7 the high-tone @ 189 energizes and in effect shorts the low-tone @ 198. As the outer contact finger leaves contact 7 this shunt ,is removed and low-tone coil 198 re-energizes. Thus the low-tone and high-tone coils energize alternately until contact 41 is passed to simulate a swinging bell. R1 releases at position 44 and the motor runs to home position. Sunday automatic swinging bell. On Sunday a blade on clock-driven disc 107 operates lever 132 to reverse switch S so that when a plate on the rear disc 122 closes switch Q and pulse switch M also closes, the apparatus functions as a swinging bell in the same manner as above described. Sunday and weekday automatic tolling bell. To provide a tolling instead of a swinging bell effect in the two paragraphs above, switch E is operated to cut out the low-tone striker coil 198. Swinging bell in part of Angelus. If the last nine strokes of the Angelus are to function as a swinging bell, switch F is operated so that from inner contact 33 relay R2 energizes so that the circuit is shifted to swinging bell operation. Swinging bell 2-minute duration. If knob K is turned one step counter-clockwise and button B is depressed momentarily the unit will sound a swinging bell automatically for about 2 minutes, i.e. the time taken by the coder switch to make one rotation, and then switch off automatically. Operation of button B ener-. gizes R to start the coder motor and switch on the amplifier. At inner contact 3 relay R2 pulls up and at inner contact 7 relay R3 pulls up so, that a swinging bell is simulated until the outer contact 41 is passed. Tolling .bell 2-minute duration. Switch. K is turned two steps counter-clockwise and button B is depressed. The operation is as in the previous paragraph except that R2 does not energize. Swinging or tolling bell continuous. With switch K moved one or two steps clockwise the "off" coil of R1 is disconnected and the swinging or tolling bell is continuous until main switch A is opened. Operation of button C energizes " off " coil 195 of R1. Push-button toll operation. If' switch A- is opened the coder and coder motor are disconnected. i Operation of button B then energizes R1 to turn on the amplifier. Each operation of button D energizes low-tone striker 198.
