Abstract
In a process for polymerizing drying-oils by heating the initial oil in the presence of sulphur dioxide, such a large surface area of contact between the liquid and the gaseous phases and/or such a high concentration of sulphur dioxide in the liquid phase is employed that the rate of polymerization, as indicated by the rate of increase in viscosity, is substantially greater than that obtained when using hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, hydrogen or carbon dioxide under the same conditions. The large surface area of contact between the liquid and the gaseous phases may be obtained by bubbling the gas through the oil by means of a dispensing nozzle or other device adapted to subdivide the gas finely, and/or by stirring or agitating the oil while passing the gas through it. The high concentration of the gas in the liquid phase may be obtained by heating the oil in the presence of sulphur dioxide under pressure. The sulphur dioxide is preferably dry, and excess gas is removed from the product by blowing with an inert gas or by heating in vacuo. In examples: (1) sulphur dioxide is passed through heated linseed oil, soya bean oil or Japanese sardine oil, while stirring; (2) sulphur dioxide is passed through a circular pipe pierced with fine holes into a heated body of linseed oil, and (3) a vessel one-fourth filled with linseed oil and three-fourths filled with sulphur dioxide at atmospheric pressure is closed and heated until the pressure of the gas is approximately doubled, whereby the concentration of the sulphur dioxide in the liquid phase is substantially increased. Specification 343,099 is referred to.
