Abstract

Rubber is plasticized by subjecting it to the action of double compounds of metal salts with unsymmetrically substituted hydrazines. Suitable hydrazines are monosubstituted hydrazines, or N-N1 disubstituted hydrazines in which the substituents belong to different classes, as one being aliphatic and the other aromatic; or tri- or tetra-substituted hydrazines in which at least two of the substituents on separate nitrogen atoms belong to different classes. One of the nitrogen atoms may form part of a ring structure. The use of the following double compounds among others is described: compounds of zinc chloride with phenyl-, p-tolyl- and pentamethylene hydrazines, and of lead or cadmium chlorides with phenyl hydrazine. The compounds are either milled into the rubber or dusted or sprayed in solution or suspension upon its surface. Sulphur and carbon black or other pigments are preferably incorporated after the softening has been produced.
