Abstract
480,070. Gauge glasses. YARNALLWARING CO. May 18, 1937, No. 13823. Convention date, March 26. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A fibrous or metallic packing 38 between a flat glass 34 and the body 21 of a gauge is pressed against a sloping seating 36 forming a wedge-shaped space into which the packing is forced by the internal steam and water pressure. An endless packing-band is held in position before being compressed by tabs or projections 51 which are stuck to the bottom of the recess 33 in the gauge body and contact with the side wall of the recess. A packing-band may be formed with inwardly projecting tabs which are bent over and stuck to the sides of the slot 22 in the body. In place of tabs, the packing may be held in position by shoulders formed on the seating. A metallic packing is protected from contact with steam and water by an inner non-metallic packing. The interior of the glass is protected by a sheet of mica 37 and the contacting surfaces of the mica and glass are coated with oil.
