Abstract

479,653. Angular bending. SOC. ANON. DES HAUTS-FOURNEAUX & FONDERIES DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. May 11, 1937, No. 13364. Convention date, May 14, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] In making bent tubes, a straight tube is cast by the centrifugal method, and the tube is then bent without applying tension to the outside of the bend. The cast pipe 1 is held in a clamp 7, and a mandrel 3 with spacers 15 is secured by nuts 5. The tube is heated by a burner 6 and the nuts 5 are tightened to effect the bend. A mass 12 suspended at the free end of the tube assists the bending. Compression rods may be secured to the tube to apply an eccentric compression load. The tube may be filled with sand or with an oxidizing substance adapted to modify the mechanical properties of the pipe.
