Abstract

479,383. Rolling. STEVENS. A. H. (United Engineering & Foundry Co.) Nov. 17, 1936, No. 31473. [Class 83(iv)] Strip passing through roughing-rolls 11-13 (at 2100‹ F. and emerging at about 1900‹ F.) is cooled (to about 1600‹ F.) by air blown on its top and bottom through pipes 26, 27 before it enters the finishing rolls 18-21. Instead of air, burning gases may issue from the pipes to supply heat to regulate the temperature. The cooling air is turned on automatically by the strip, at each longitudinal section 29a, 29b, &c. in succession, the control mechanism comprising strip-operated flag switches 43a, Fig. 6, turning adjustable-period limit switches 45a whereby current is supplied to actuate solenoids 36 whereby the butterfly valves 34, Fig. 5, in the air pipes of each section are operated. An adjustable stop 42 for the solenoid controls the degree of opening of the valves 34. Transverse control of the air supply is obtained by rotating a ported sleeve valve 50, Fig. 10, by a hand wheel 50a for each transverse pipe 28. As the leading and trailing ends of the strip may cool sufficiently of themselves the cooling may be suspended at those parts. The top cooling pipes 26 may be hinged at one end to pivot up clear of the bed conveyer 16. Radiation pyrometers may be disposed along the table whereby the strip temperature may actuate time-delay switches for the supply of cooling fluid. Furnaces 7 are situated at the beginning of the plant and flying shears 20 or a coiler 23 at the other end.
