Abstract

479,081. Electrolysis ; batteries. DAL PONTE, R., and MULLER, E. May 20, 1937, No. 14106. [Classes 41 and 53] Accumulator electrodes are produced by electrodeposition of metal on a grid 4 connected as cathode from a jet 3 of electrolyte projected from a nozzle 2 enclosing the anode 1 ; the deposit is then oxidized electrolytically by an alkaline electrolyte projected from a similar apparatus in which the electrode within the nozzle is connected as cathode. The grid is rotated during treatment. In the latter operation the cathode is preferably enclosed within a diaphragm to permit disengagement of gas. In a further step the oxide deposit may be reduced to form active metal. In a modification an alkaline electrolyte is employed for the deposition of metal and an intermittent current is employed, the electrodes being short-circuited during the periods of interruption. During the passage of current the metaldeposit is oxidized by oxygen carried along from the anode; during interruption the deposit is reduced and activated. Silver may be deposited from a cyanide solution. The deposition base may consist of thin iron, steel, aluminium or other metal foil or fabric or of metal coated fabric or films of organic material such as celluloid or gelatine ; the base material may be removed after deposition by chemical, thermal or mechanical means. The base may consist of angle section strip 6 wound on a metal mandrel 7.
