Abstract
479,032. Linkwork. KILBY, J. A. July 28, 1936, No. 20868. [Class 80 (iii)] Consists in means for converting straight-line reciprocating motion into rotary motion, and particularly for causing the gudgeon of a steam engine mechanism, to move in a straight line without the aid of cross-heads and slides which are liable to collect grit. The gudgeon 6 is carried by eccentric discs 5 rotatably mounted in the bifurcated ends 3 of a banjoshaped arm 1 pivoted at 2 to the engine frame, the small end 7 of the connecting-rod, and the piston-rod 11 being journalled on the pin 6 between the discs. An arm or projection 8 from the eccentric discs is pivoted to an anchor link 9 which, in turn, is pivoted at 10 to the cylinder casting. The setting of the linkwork is such that, in mid-stroke, the arm 1 hangs vertically, and the gudgeon 6 and pivot pin of the arm 8 and link 9 are vertically under the pivot pin 2. The swinging of the arm 1 and the oscillation therein of the eccentric discs 5 produce a straight-line motion of the pin 6.
