Abstract
479,002. Automatic exchange switches. R1CHTER, M. B. July 8, 1937, No. 19053. [Class 40 (iv)] In a power-driven rotary switch in which the line wipers are withdrawn from the bank whilst the clutch magnet is energized, the switch is stopped and held in a set position by a multi-toothed pawl controlled by the armature of the clutch magnet and engaging a ratchet wheel which is mounted on the wiper-carriage and has a diameter substantially equal to that of the path of the wiper-tips. In the switch shown, the wipercarriage 5 and a power-driven drum 1 are separately mounted on ball-bearings on a common fixed shaft 4. The clutch magnet 24 is fixed outside the terminal bank' and its armature 23 pivoted at 28 is linked to a rod 29 passing through the shaft 4 and carrying at its upper end a cross-bar 30 with diametricallyopposite pins 31 engaging linked pivoted levers 32, 33 on the wiper carriage. On energization of the clutch magnet, the armature 23 first withdraws the locking pawl 18 from the ratchet wheel 17 by means of a two-a.rmed lever 21 and then through the rod 29 and pins 31 depresses levers 32, 33 to force sliding clutch-members 36 into engagement with the inner surface of the drum 1. At the same time, levers 9 cause the insulating plates 7 on which the wipers 6 are resiliently mounted to slide inwardly on the carriage 5 to withdraw the wipers from the bank during rotation. The wipers make only bridging contacts between pairs of fixed contacts 12. A hook 53 may be provided on the lever 21 to prevent the armature moving sufficiently to permit the wipers to move between two adjacent pairs of terminals if the teeth of the pawl 18 do not engage with the bottom of the teeth in the ratchet wheel.
