Abstract

<PICT:0478414/III/1> <PICT:0478414/III/2> <PICT:0478414/III/3> In a fuel-injection system for an internal-combustion engine, particularly for aircraft, two feed pumps draw from a suction tank, the suction pipe being pivoted within the tank, and deliver through an air separator to the fuel-injection pump. The suction chamber of the fuel-injection pump is connected through a spring-loaded valve with the suction tank. The air separator comprises a chamber 11a in which a rotatable member 51 fitted with a pendulum 54 is arranged. Fuel is supplied through pipes 5 and 53 to the chamber and is delivered through bore 55 and pipe 7 to the injection pump. The air separated passes through throttle 64 and passage 61 to the pipe 10a connected to the induction pipe. The throttle 64 is closed by a valve 66 actuated by a float 67 all the time the level in the separator exceeds a predetermined level. In a modification, the delivery sides of the fuel pumps are connected to the suction tank through spring-loaded valves instead of the suction chamber of the fuel-injection pump. In this system the air separator shown in Fig. 4 is employed wherein the air pipe 83 is connected to a sleeve 80 pivoted on an extension of the rotatable member. A float 81 is fixed to the sleeve and the pipe 87 having orifices 88 and a ball 89 is connected to the pipe 83. When the level of the fuel falls to a predetermined value, the sleeve 80 is rotated by the float 81 and the pipe 83 aligns with a port 85 so that air is discharged to the pipe 10a connected to the induction pipe. The float is balanced by a weight 82. Sealing liquid to the sleeve 80 is supplied through the pipe 70. In a further modification, the air separator is divided into two chambers 97, 98. Fuel is fed through bore 102, pipe 104 to chamber 97 and delivered through a bore in the rotatable member to the pipe 7. Air and any fuel carried by it passes through the pipe 107 to chamber 98 where a second rotatable member is arranged. The shaft 110 has a pendulum weight 112 attached and the sleeve 113 has an air pipe 114 and float 115 attached and also a fuel pipe 121. When the fuel level falls, the pipe 114 aligns with a port 116 and air is discharged to the pipe 10a and when the fuel level rises the pipe 121 aligns with the port 122 and fuel is discharged through pipe 7a to the feed pump suction. Sealing liquid is supplied through the pipe 126.
