Abstract

In the preparation of catalysts comprising finely divided metallic nickel suspended in an inert liquid such as mineral oil, a reducible nickel compound precipitated in an aqueous medium is ground in a colloid mill with an excess of precipitating agent. The mass is repeated filtered, diluted with water, and repassed through the colloid mill until free from all traces of water-soluble salt. The reduction to the metallic state is preferably effected after the precipitate has been dried and dispersed in the inert medium. The nickel is preferably precipitated from an aqueous solution of a soluble salt by means of alkaline carbonate. Additional substances may be mixed with the nickel compound, e.g. copper hydroxide or basic carbonate for facilitating the reduction of the nickel, or aluminium or magnesium hydroxide for retarding the growth of crystals of the precipitated nickel compound. After reduction, the product may be re-ground in a paint mill. The catalysts are particularly useful for the hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to butyraldehyde and butyl alcohol.
