Abstract

477,298. Liquid-fuel burners. KNUPFFER, M. June 24, 1936, No. 17561. [Class 75 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] The atomizing nozzle 7 of a liquid-fuel burner is mounted in an extension 6 or a member attached in heat conducting relation to a fuel preheating chamber 1, the extension or member being of large mass in proportion to its heat radiating surface so as to maintain the fuel near the nozzle sufficiently fluid to ensure atomization by the air blast when the fan motor is started. The preheating chamber contains a fuel strainer and two thermostats 31, one controlling the supply of current to an immersion heater 29 and the other the current to the motor driving the fuel pump and fan. The fan is arranged in a casing 8a and delivers air past a pivoted light aluminium damper 11 to a draught tube 4 which is fitted adjacent the nozzle 7 with a cone 17 formed with airswirling vanes 22, a flame inspection window, and ignition electrodes 21. The draught tube and cone are slotted to allow the draught tube to slide rearwardly in guides 37 on the housing 8a to allow of access to the nozzle 7. A tubular filling piece 18 for the slots in the draught tube and cone is attached to the extension 6. A valve 10 controlling the fuel passage in the nozzle 7 is pressed by a light spring into contact with a spindle 27 attached to a spring-pressed diaphragm arranged in a housing 14 carried by a tube 3 which is secured to the extension 6. The tube 3 communicates with the fuel passage 9 in the extension 6 so that the valve 10 only opens when the fuel pressure on the diaphragm overcomes the resistance of the spring 26. The chamber 1 may be partially or wholly surrounded by asbestos lagging 35 covered with aluminium sheeting. In a modification, a single thermostat arranged in a tubular strainer operates in succession two mercury switches, the first operated starting the fuel pump and fan motor and the second opening the circuit of the immersion heater. Specification 479,019, [Group VII], is referred to.
