Abstract

548,310. Liquid heaters. HOURVITZ, A. April 3, 1941, No. 4476. Convention date, April 4, 1940. [Classes 75 (i), 75 (iii) and 126] [Also in Groups XIII and XXXVII] A heater for water or other liquids comprises a liquid or gaseous fuel burner, a heat exchanger and combustion chamber in which during the operation of the burner a pressure is maintained above the atmosphere of the surrounding room to which the heater is closed. Fig. 1, shows the heater provided with a burner of the kind described in Specification 501,938. The combustion chamber 2 is surrounded by a water jacket enclosed by inner and outer walls 1, 6 and containing baffles 16, 16a. Ribs 1a are provided in the wall of the combustion chamber in which is also located a core 3 of steel or refractory material. The heater is mounted on wall brackets 15, 15a which provide an inlet 14 and outlet 14a for the water or liquid to be heated. When the water supply cock is opened a ball 41 is forced from its seat on the water inlet and causes flexing of a tube 39 to the upper end of which the ball is connected by a rod 40 having an extension engaging with electric contacts 43 which are closed and the current is supplied to the motor 18 of the burner B and fan 22 which draws air from the atmosphere through the pipe 10 and flap 11 into the casing 17. Oil is drawn from.the container 23 through the tube 19 to the cup 20 and is ignited by the igniting electrical resistance 42 the circuit of which is also closed when the water is turned on. When the burner is in action the pressure in the combustion chamber is communicated through a pipe to the upper surface of a diaphragm 44 and breaks electric contacts 49 in the igniter circuit, the contacts being closed when the pressure in the combustion chamber falls below a predetermined level or the burner is accidentally extinguished The lower surface of the diaphragm 44 is exposed to the pressure of the atmosphere through ports 50a in the bottom wall 50 of the casing 17. A gauge 25 indicates the level of oil in the tube 19 and the upper end of the gauge is provided with a socket 30 and cap 31 for supplying oil through the passage 32 to the container 23, in the upper wall of which is provided a sealing cup 34, Fig. 5, for tubes 33, 35 allowing the escape of air from the container 23 when it is being filled. Unburnt oil from the burner passes through sealed tubes 37, 38 back to the container 23. Specification 547,263, [Group XIII], also is referred to.
