Abstract

Bearing - members, e.g. journals, sleeve-valves, cylinders, or cylinder liners, which are made of hard metal and have been brought to the desired shape and smoothness are treated to convert the surface into a dense, amorphous, glass-like layer and are then coated with one or more layers of metal, each coating being treated to convert it into or to form at the surface a dense, amorphous, glass-like layer. The coating metal may be the same as the base metal or may be any other hard metal, i.e. a metal with a melting point above 1200 DEG C., which is soluble in or alloyable with the preceding layer. To convert the surfaces from the normal crystalline state into the dense, amorphous, glass-like condition they are polished, burnished, hammered, rumbled, or subjected to a shearing stress, the treatment being such as not substantially to alter the configuration of the surfaces. By this process an artificially run-in surface of non-corrodible metal such as chromium, nickel, cobalt, beryllium, manganese, or vanadium can be formed on a ferrous metal journal or other bearing-member. The coatings may be deposited by electrodeposition, flashing, dipping, &c.
