<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PERFEOTIONNING FOR THE COVERING OF METAL SURFACES.
The invention relates to a method for coating metal surfaces.
It has been found that when metallic surfaces are polished, burnished, or hammered, the normal crystal structure of the surface is destroyed and atoms are displaced from positions that they normally meet in the crystal grid or lattice and come together or agglomerate. to form a glass-like, amorphous, dense and hard vitreous layer on the metal surface.
In the present specification, the expression "hammered" encompasses the process of "sassage" or "rolling" using rollers: or balls, one or the other kind of "sassage" or "rolling" treatment. ", by" permanent contact "or by" shock "is suitable for breaking the grids or crystalline networks of the metal of the surface being treated.
It has also been found that subjecting the surface of the metal to a tearing or shearing force in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The change according to the surface is sufficient to break the grid or crystal lattice and disturb the atoms so that they form the amorphous, dense and hard layer mentioned above.
Burnished surfaces possess the special property, which the normal oristalline surface of the metal does not have, of being able to dissolve very easily crystals of the same metal, or of a foreign metal, at ordinary temperature, provided that the foreign metal is not insoluble in or unable to alloy with the metal of the burnished surface.
According to the invention, a process for the preparation of metal surfaces consists in covering the surface of a metal base with the same metal, or with the aid of a metal soluble in or capable of alloying with the metal of the base, and to treat the crystalline surfaces of the base and of the covering so as to transform them into amorphous vitreous layers, in the deorite manner, by breaking the crystalline grids or networks of the metal of the surface *
Preferably the surface of the base metal is treated so as to form said amorphous vitreous layer, and the metallic coating is then applied and treated to form an amorphous vitreous layer thereon.
A characteristic of the invention resides in the fact that a certain number of metallic coatings are successively applied, the surfaces of each reopening being treated in the manner indicated above.
In some cases, it is desirable to provide a cover formed of a metal which is not soluble in, or cannot be alloyed with, the base metal and, under like conditions, another feature of the invention is. in applying to the base an intermediate coating formed of a metal, which is soluble in, or is capable of alloying with both the base metal and the first named metal.
It will be understood that it is thus possible to apply a covering formed of a similar metal which will be intimately connected or united to the metal of the base by means of an intermediate covering of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
bond which is, for each intermediate surface, alloyed with the metals located on both sides.
Another important feature of the invention is to treat metal-containing surfaces in the manner described above, applying a metal coating thereto and treating the surface of the coating to form the aforesaid glassy, amorphous and dense layer. It will be noted that the bearing or bearing surfaces thus treated must not be "lapped" in order to obtain the smooth working surfaces which are essential.
Yet another characteristic of the invention consists in forming a bearing or bearing comprising a reopening of an appropriate metal, as described providing the formation of an artificial "lapped" surface. According to one embodiment of this method, a metallic bearing or bearing surface by treating a ferrous metal bushing or bearing, by burnishing for example, in order to destroy the crystalline structure of the surface and to transform this surface into an amorphous vitreous layer as aforesaid; in applying a coating of an inoorrodable or stainless metal, for example ohrome or nickel, and in converting said coating into an amorphous vitreous layer as defined above.
It will be noted that, in this way, it is possible to obtain a bearing or bearing comprising a dense, hardened surface formed of a stainless metal of the class of chromium, nickel, cobalt, beryllium (glucinium), copper. , zinc, manganese and vanadium, on a basis of a suitable metal which, although having properties, that is to say a tensile strength, which makes its use desirable for the main part of the article, is liable to corrode and is therefore unsuitable for use in some cases.
It will also be noted that the method of the invention can be applied to the treatment of bearing or bearing surfaces other than the bearings or bushings of a crankshaft, and the like, for example, the spools of spool motors can be provided with an inoorrodable or stainless surface formed as described, and it will be understood that cylinder bores or cylinder liners may be treated in a similar manner.

The metal covering can be formed or deposited on the base in any suitable manner; for example the metal coating can be formed by electrolytic spraying or dipping.
