Abstract

477,037. Viewing objects by infra-red light. KUNZ, J. May 18, 1936, No. 14106. Convention date, May 18, 1935. [Classes 97 (i) and 98 (i)] An image of the object is produced by an optical system on an excited phosphorescent screen, the stored-up energy of which is driven out as visible radiation in proportion to the intensity of the infra-red light thus forming a positive image which is observed directly. Phosphors such as sodium or caesium bromide in which the light - quenchable luminosity is greater than the heat-quenchable luminosity may be used and the phosphors may be excited first by exposure to cathode or X-rays and then to visible light. As shown in Fig. 2, light passes through a lens 7 and is reflected from a prism 8 to the phosphorescent screen 9 heated or cooled by a substance in the container 13, observation being effected through a lens 10. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 contains an exciting lamp 22 which illuminates the screen 16 by way of a lens 23 and a prism 24 when an opening 21 in a circular shutter 18 registers with the lens 23 in which position of the shutter the other two apertures are closed. Rotation of the shutter covers the lamp and allows infra-red light to fall on the screen via the lens 15 and prism 14. In Fig. 4, the screen 26 is rotated intermittently about an axis 27 so as to be excited by the lamp 28. Suitable phosphors for the screen may be the Lenard Phosphor CaSPb or ZnSMn, or sodium or caesium bromide. Crystals of rubidium chloride or potassium chloride withdrawn from a fused melt may also be used. Specification 294,671, [Class 97 (i)], is referred to.
