[Class 40 (iv)] In a four-wire carrier multiplex system using different frequency bands for the two directions of transmission, each channel (two bands) is transmitted over a separate two-wire line between a four-wire terminal and the modulating and demodulating equipment. This arrangement is suitable for use where the terminal station is some distance from the actual cable terminal and avoids the loss of a number of channels in case of an unserviceable line between the cable terminal and the station. As shown, east-bound bands of the channels over L2 are separated by filters O11-O31 and transmitted over lines VI-V3 to demodulating branches DM1-DM3 leading to low - frequency lines T1-T3. West - bound transmissions from these lines pass over modulating branches M1-M3 to the lines V1-V3 and are sent to line L1 over filters Z11-Z21. Separating and low-pass filters are provided in the modulating and demodulating branches.
