[Class 40 (iv)] In a multi-channel carrier transmission system, particularly over land line or cable, channels are grouped in pairs, as shown in Fig. 2, using the upper side band for the lower frequency channel of a pair and the lower side band for the upper frequency channel, the channels of a pair being arranged so that the upper modulation frequencies are adjacent and a single band-pass filter may be used. This, whilst providing substantially the same number of channels over a given frequency range as the system with equal spacing shown in Fig. 1, permits wider spacing and reduces the number of filters. At the receiving end, Fig. 3, the pairs are separated by band-pass filters 4 and the two channels of a pair are separated by supplying the original carriers separately to demodulators 7, 8 associated with low-frequency filters 9, 10. In a modification involving two stages of modulation, the pairs are formed by using two auxiliary carriers of the same frequency for each pair, the pairs being spaced along the transmission bend by main carriers having a different frequency for each pair. The band corresponding to any pair may be used for transmitting music.
