Abstract

In the high vacuum distillation of organic substances containing vitamins or sterols and which are liquid at the distilling temperature, a substance of low volatility is added to the material being distilled which distils over as a mixed distillate with a desired fraction. The process may be applied to vegetable and animal oils, fats and waxes, the oils specified for obtaining vitamins A, D and E comprising cod and halibut liver oils, menhaden, salmon, dogfish, swordfish and wheat germ oil. The added substances may comprise fatty acids, esters, mineral oil fractions, terpenes, and essential oils, the particular substances specified for recovering vitamin A comprising aliphatic phthalates, benzyl phthalate, b -phenyl ethyl phthalate and diglycerol tetrapropionate. The added material may comprise a substance more volatile than the desired fraction. The process is carried out under a high vacuum of not more than 1 mm. of mercury, short path high vacuum distillation being preferred. In an example, four parts of tri-pelargonin are added to one of fish oil and the mixture distilled under high vacuum to give a mixed fraction at 160 DEG C. rich in vitamins A and D. U.S.A. Specifications 1,925,559, 1,942,858, and 1,955,321 are referred to.ALSO:In the high-vacuum distillation of organic substances, such as oily concentrates, containing vitamins, sterols, &c., hormones and which are liquid at the distilling temperature, a substance of low volatility is added to the material being distilled which distils over as a mixed distillate with a desired fraction.
