Abstract
In the high-vacuum distillation of oils, fats, waxes and the like containing easily oxidizable materials such as vitamins A, D and E, oxidation of these vitamins, as by absorbed oxygen or peroxides, is prevented by effecting the distillation in the presence of an antioxidant having a volatility approximating to that of the desired distillate; 0,001-1,0 per cent is suitable. The antioxidant may be left in or removed from the collected fraction. Short-path high-vacuum distillation is preferably employed with distilling temperatures of 70-250 DEG C. A mixture of antioxidants may be used each having a volatility near that of the fractions to be collected. Antioxidants specified p comprise hydroquinone, pyrogallol, furfurol, pyrocatechol, hydroxyhydroquinone, p-amino-phenol, 1-2-4-trihydroxybenzene, 2-amino-5-hydroxytoluene, benzyl - p - aminophenol, p - hydroxy - phenylmorpholine, dibenzyl-p-aminophenol, 1-5-dihydroxynaphthalene, 2-4 and p-p1-diaminodiphenylamines. Fish liver and body oils to which the process may be applied comprise tuna, jaw, ling, cod, halibut, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardine and menhaden. In one example 100 litres of cod liver oil and 1 to 10 grams of 1 : 2 : 4-trihydroxy-benzene are distilled under short-path conditions at ,001 mm. of mercury. The chief vitamin constituent of the respective fractions collected at 120 DEG , 150 DEG , 170 DEG and 200 DEG C., is vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin A esters and vitamin D esters respectively. The trihydroxy-benzene collects mainly in the early and middle fractions.ALSO:In the high vacuum distillation of oils and fats containing vitamins A, D and E, which may also contain absorbed oxygen or peroxides, oxidation of the former by the latter is prevented by effecting the distillation in the presence of an antioxidant having a volatility approximating to that of the desired distillate, and collecting a fraction containing the vitamins and antioxidant in admixture. Short-path high vacuum distillation is preferably employed with distilling temperatures of 70-250 DEG C. A mixture of antioxidants may be used each having a volatility near that of the fractions to be collected. Antioxidants specified comprise hydroquinone, pyrogallol, furfurol, pyrocatechol, hydroxyhydroquinone, p-aminophenol, 1.2.4-trihydroxybenzene, 2-amino-5-hydroxytoluene, benzyl-p-aminophenol, p-hydroxy - phenylmorpholine, dibenzyl - p-aminophenol, 1.5-dihydroxynaphthalene, 2.4 and p-p1-diaminodiphenylamine. Fish liver and body oils to which the process may be applied comprise tuna, jaw, ling cod, halibut, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardine and menhaden. In an example, 100 litres of cod liver oil and 1 to 10 grams of 1 : 2 : 4-trihydroxybenzene are distilled under short path conditions at ,001 mm. of mercury. The chief constituent of each of the fractions collected at 120 DEG , 150 DEG , 170 DEG and 200 DEG C., comprises vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin A esters and vitamin D esters respectively.
