Abstract

550,983. Fats and fatty oils; soaps. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. July 30, 1941, No. 9673. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1940. [Class 91] [Also in Groups V, IV and VI] Fats, fatty oils and soaps are protected against oxidation by addition of an antioxidant extract obtained from fatty oils, fats and waxes other than hydrogenated oils, e.g. from vegetable oils and fats, fish liver oils, whale oil and egg oil, by adding a solvent consisting of or containing a liquid, aliphatic or alicyclic compound which is miscible with the fatty materials at temperatures substantially above atmospheric and partially immiscible at temperatures below, and separating the solution from the immiscible layer. Classes of solvents used are aliphatic and alicyclic monohydric alcohols of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, aldehydes of not more than 6 carbon atoms, esters, of not more than 8 carbon atoms, of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with aliphatic or alicyclic alcohols, and aliphatic ketones of not more than 6 carbon atoms. A solvent, e.g. acetone, which is too miscible with a fatty material to effect separation, may be diluted with water or with a relatively immiscible aliphatic solvent. The extraction may be effected in an inert gas and the oil may be heated, preferably not above 170‹C. if it contains vitamins. After mixing, e.g. so that there is 2 to 25 per cent. of oil in the mixture, and cooling, e.g. to 0 to -70‹C., the solvent layer containing the antioxidants is separated from the oil and may be filtered, and the solvent removed, as by vacuum distillation. Water may be added to the extracts to precipitate some of the glycerides, or some of the sterols may be removed. Specification 549,447, [Group IV], is referred to.
