Abstract
549,447. Vitamins. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. May 14, 1941, No. 6211. Convention date, July 2, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Highly potent vitamin extracts are obtained from fat-soluble vitamin-containing oils by treatment at a temperature above mean atmospheric temperature with an aliphatic solvent which is miscible with fatty oils at temperatures substantially above mean atmospheric temperature but which is only partly miscible therewith at lower temperatures, and cooling the mixture to form two layers which are separated. The solvent may be an aliphatic or alicyclic monohydroxy alcohol containing from three to six carbon atoms, an ester formed by reaction of an aliphatic or alicyclic alcohol with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, the ester containing not more than eight carbon atoms, an aliphatic or alicyclic aldehyde of not more than six carbon atoms, or an aliphatic ketone of not more than six carbon atoms, e.g. isopropanol or diacetone alcohol. A small amount of water or a liquid aliphatic compound more immiscible with fatty oils may be added to the solvent. The natural anti-oxidants present in the oil are extracted with the vitamins. The vitamin extract may be further extracted with methanol or ethanol as described in Specification 547,486. Oils. treated include cod liver, shark liver, tuna liver, halibut liver, ling cod liver, sole liver, spear fish liver, sword fish liver, palm, and wheat germ oil.
