Abstract

475,884. Centrifugal dust-separators. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation) May 28, 1936, No. 15036. [Class 23] A dust-laden gas stream is passed through a bladed fan member which precipitates centrifugally the coarser particles, and the stream is conducted to the outer edges of a number of closely-spaced rotating discs from which finer particles are thrown while the gas passes radially inwards between the discs and thence to the discharge outlet. The casing has two parts 5, 6 ; the latter 6 has perforations 10 for the expulsion of air, and the former 5 has an inlet 9 below the level of the shaft 60 which is supported in bearings 61 and driven by a belt 63. The collar 65 secured to the shaft 60 has a conical flange 68 which is slotted to support one end of each fan blade 76 the other end of which is supported by the ring 71. A nest of conical discs 98 is held by bolts 82 between the flange 68 and the spider 84. A fan 108 within the part 6 of the casing draws the gas stream through the apparatus. The dust-laden stream undergoes a sharp change of direction in passing from the casing inlet 9 to the entry of the rotor between the fan blades 76. This change causes the coarsest particles to pass through the slot 38 in the casing into the drawer 34. The stream passes into the rotor and is drawn radially inwards between the discs 98 ; it then passes to the discharge outlets 10 through the fan 108. While passing through the rotor the dust particles are thrown outwards centrifugally to the conical surfaces 78, 89. Particles travelling outwards between the discs 98 coalesce and form larger particles which join the finer dust on the surfaces. This separated material slides outwards and passes through the slot 96 between the surfaces 78, 89 into the annular trough 54 from which it is discharged through the slot 41 into the drawer 35. If dust tends to accumulate in the chamber 50 it can pass through the slot 52 and the hole 53 to be entrained by the stream entering the rotor for treatment. The fan 97 acts as a seal to prevent leakage of dust from the rotor by drawing air into it mainly from the space between the plates 13, 15. The dust may be collected in bins with regulatable discharge valves instead of being collected in the drawers 34, 35.
