Abstract

475,424. Window shutters or blinds ; draught - excluders. HOWARD BROS., Ltd., and BUTLER, A. L. S. May 19, 1936, Nos. 14161/36 and 9776/37. [Class 20 (iii)] A roller shutter or the like, of the type comprising a plurality of slats connected by flexible elements is constructed and mounted in guides so as to be gas-tight between adjacent slats and around its outer edges. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, rectangularsection slats b in contact along their longitudinal edges are cemented or otherwise secured, such as by pins c passing through thin clamping plates d, to a sheet a of rubberized canvas or like material. According to a modification, additional slats may be secured to the rear surface of the sheet a, said slats being bevelled along their edges to permit angular movement thereof in passing over the roller. Fig. 6 shows a construction of shutter similar to that described in Specification 435,556, but which is rendered gas-tight by the insertion of strips of rubberized fabric j between the edges b<6>, b<7> of adjacent slats. The ends of the slats are received in guides e, Fig. 2, lined with channel-shaped resilient members e<1> which are pressed against the faces of the shutter by additional resilient members e<2> which may be hollow or solid. The members e<2> may comprise tubes adapted to be filled with air or other suitable gas. The lower edge of the shutter carries a strip of sealing material which in the closed position contacts with the base of the shutter frame, or a sealing member may be provided in a recess in the base of the frame against which the shutter edge comes into contact, and the roller mounting at the top of the frame is provided with casings in which are mounted sealing members which bear against the front and rear surfaces of the shutter. In the case of very large shutters, the slats may be mounted on a plurality of sheets of rubberized fabric, the edges of adjacent sheets being joined together by tape to render them gas-tight.
