[Class 94 (ii)] In an envelope-making machine, particularly for making envelopes of the centre-seam type, means are provided for feeding a web of transparent or other material, at one of a variety of optional speeds, the side notching cutter and the blank severing cutter being adjusted to operate, for a part of their cycles, on the web, which is moving at any desired speed although rotating at a predetermined frequency independently of the web speed. A web 1 from a reel 2, guided around rolls 3, 4, has notches cut from the two edges by a notching cutter 8, furnished with suction apertures 12, which take the cut out portions around until a paddle 13 knocks them into a waste bin 15. The variations of speed of the notching cutters is effected as in Specification 435,485. A longitudinal edge of the web is now gummed by a wheel 51 running in co-operation with a grooved presser wheel 53, the latter being periodically raised to jump the gaps in the web by a cam-operated frame 54, 58, the operating cam 60 having adjustable cam plates 62, 63. The frame 54, 58 also carries a plate 57, slotted to receive the wheel 53, which is raised and lowered simultaneously therewith to move the web away from the gumming disc 51. The side flaps are now folded over by plates 68, and feed rolls 5, 6 forward the folded web to the rotary cutter 69, 70, which is driven through a crank and eccentric device whereby the speed thereof may be adjusted to that of the web by an adjustment of the eccentric throw. The speed of the web may be varied, for the production of longer or shorter envelopes, by replacing a gear in the train driving the feed roll 5 by one of greater or lesser diameter, the notching cutter 8 and the blank severing cutter 69, 70 being then separately adjusted so that during contact of the respective knives with the web they are moving at substantially the same speed. The severed blanks are moved quickly away from the cutter by sectors' 85, driven at twice the speed of the cutter 69, 70, the sectors 85 being raised by cam action to be inoperative every other revolution. Feed rolls 105, 106 now feed the blanks to a scoring roll 113, thence the bottom flap 160 is gummed, folded over and ironed, and delivery is effected by apparatus 125, 126, 162, similar to that set forth in Specification 437,608. The top feed rolls of the pairs 84, 85 ; 105, 106 and the top scoring roll 113 are carried by rock shafts so that movement apart of those roller pairs may be effected when the machine is standing idle. The feed roll 3 is driven slightly faster than the rolls 5, 6, so that the web is free from excessive tension while being operated upon.
