Abstract
475,060. Electrolytic production of hyposulphites. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. May 11, 1936, Nos. 13361 and 13362. Convention dates, May 10, 1935 and June 7, 1935. [Class 41] In the electrolytic production of hyposulphites by cathodic reduction of a bisulphitecontaining solution, a solution having an alkaline reaction is employed as anolyte; this may be an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate but an alkali metal sulphite solution is also suitable. An excess hydrostatic pressure is maintained in the anode chamber whereby the alkaline anolyte is forced through the diaphragm; sulphur dioxide is passed into the catholyte for formation of the bisulphite. A solution of bisulphite and sulphate is obtained in the anode compartment. Part of this may be used subsequently as catholyte and the remainder treated for recovery of sulphur dioxide. The cathode may be of lead but preferably consists of spaced thin wires ; a silver wire net is suitable. The anode may be of lead or V2A steel. The catholyte may be agitated by introduction of inert gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen or nitrogen.
