Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce caustic alkali without substantially producing H2 in a cathode chamber by electrolyzing an aqueous alkali chloride soln. while passing gaseous O2 contg. air into the cathode consisting of a gas diffusion electrode.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolytic chamber 1 is constituted of an anode chamber 1 having the anode 2, a cathode chamber 4 and a gas chamber 5. The chamber 3 and chamber 4 are partitioned by a diaphragm 6 and the chamber 4 and chamber 5 by a gas diffusion electrode 7, respectively. Also, the gas diffusion electrode 7 as the cathode is provided in the chamber 4, and a catalyst that accelerates the formation of OH- and/or the reaction of O2 and water (e.g.; Dd) is present in this cathode 7. At the time of electrolyzing alkali chloride in this tank, a gas 22 contg. air is supplied 11 into the chamber 5, is passed through the inside of the cathode 7, and is caused to react with water on the electrode 7 surface, whereby caustic alkali is formed in the chamber 4. In this case, said gas is to be produced as bubbles from the cathode 7 surface into catholyte and the O2 concn. in the bubbles is required to be maintained at ≥5vol%.
