Abstract
474,875. Vacuum cleaners. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Quadrex Corporation) Feb. 24, 1937, No. 5503. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] A vacuum cleaner comprises an annular motor-suction unit structure and has a cylindrical filter with a solid top, the operating- handle extending centrally therethrough ; a dirt-laden air-duct and a manually-emptyable, dirt-receiving compartment are arranged centrally between the suction inlet and filter. Means are provided for manually opening the filter top for inspection. The motorsuction unit 1 includes a casing 2 surrounding the motor and a fan 3. Dirt-laden air is exhausted from the fan into a chamber between the outer casing 4 and the unit 1. The outer casing has a partition 6 which separates an up-draught tube 7 from the dirt-receiving chamber 8. The filter is joined to a continuous ring 9. The chamber 8 may have a door or a removable dirt-receptacle. A blower cover 12 may be joined by screws 15 or by a hinge 13 and a manual attachment 14. The tube 7 may have a cover 16. The filter 20 has an updraught 21 leading to the top and communicates at the bottom with the tube 7. The filter has a hard fibre sleeve 22. The filter top 30 is secured to the sleeve 22, carries the operator's handle, has an inspection lift lid 32, carries a flexible lead-in for a cord line 33, holds a floor wheel 34, and may carry a cord hook 35. The handle has a switch 36. A strip of metal and fibre covers the electric connections. The filter is anchored between a ring 45 and the sleeve 22. In a modification, the entire top is hinged and may be opened. The cover may carry an automatically-releasable cord hook which may be snapped into the, vertical or horizontal position, and which operates in conjunction with a lower hook 65, Fig. 1. A fixed, spring finger holds the last turn. Modified forms of filter tops which may be opened for inspection are shown in Fig. 7 (not shown). In one construction the filter sleeve is made in two parts connected by a piano hinge and a latch and secured at the top by bayonet joints. Specifications 474,876 and 474,877 are referred to.
