[Class 112] In a. machine for seaming edges of long lengths of fabric, the machine runs along the edges of the fabric on a railway and is operated by an electric motor. The two end pieces of fabric are overlapped and secured on the pins 77 with the free ends beneath, the presser 78 of the sewing-machine A. The electric motor M is then started by a switch S on the carriage 5. As the driving belt 11 from the motor is on the loose pulley 10, the carriage 5 and machine A remain stationary. The belt is shifted to the driving pulley 9 by the manual belt-shipper 13 which is retained in " running " position by the latch-lever 19. The shaft of the beltshipper 13 carries the spring-pressed plunger 17 to one side of the stop-pin 23 and frees the carriage 5. The main shaft 8 then drives the sewing-machine to commence stitching. By means of the sprocket chain drive 52 between the wheels 51 and 53, the speed-reducing gear is set in motion and through the sprocketwheel 71 meshing with the stationary chain 34, the carriage 5 and machine A are propelled along the tracks 3 to traverse the edges. As the carriage 5 approaches the end of its range of travel, the latch-lever 19 will be released by the engagement with the rounded upper end 27 of the tripper 26 and owing to the action of the spring 18, the belt-shipper 13 is moved to the " off position, shifting the belt from the pulley 9 to the loose pulley 10 and allowing the machine A to come to rest. When the carriage 5 with the machine A has arrived at the end of its range of travel, the carriage is returned to starting position by giving the chain 34 a partial circulatory movement by the wheel 38 after releasing the pawl 40 from the ratchet - wheel 39. As the carriage approaches its starting position, the spring- pressed plunger 17 rides over the top of the stop - pin 23. A blower 30 fixed to the bracket 29, Fig. 2, is provided with a tube 31 terminating over an inclined shoot 32. The blower is driven from the motor M by the belt 33 and keeps the shoot clear of trimmings.
