[Class 56] [Also in Groups XL and XX] The envelope of a discharge tube filled with gas or vapour is made at least partly of fluorescent glass which is coated on the side turned towards the discharge entirely or partly with a layer of material, such as boric or phosphoric acid, which is more resistant than the glass to the discharge and is transparent to the rays producing fluorescence in the glass. The deterioration of the fluorescent glass is reduced by the protective layer; life curves of lamps with and without the layer are shown and compared. Additional fluorescent material such as zinc silicate may be provided in or on the protective layer, for example, as an inner layer.
