Abstract

473,446. Photo-mechanical printing surfaces. TOMLINSON, A. V. (Bekk & Kaulen Chemische Fabrik Ges., Dr.) Aug. 7, 1936, No. 21818. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 10, 1937.] [Class 98 (ii)] Autotypes are prepared by copying a screened image by projection with or without enlargement onto a sensitized colloid layer applied over a varnish coating on a metal support, developing the resulting image, and removing the unhardened colloid and the underlying varnish, the metal support exposed thereby being etched, if desired, and coated with a layer of a metal such as lead preferably by electrolytic deposition. Alternatively, if a support of grained zinc is used, removal of the varnish and the subsequent procedure may be omitted. A suitable varnish for the process consists of a phenol-formaldehyde synthetic resin dissolved in acetone and butanol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a process in which a colloid layer on a metal support is printed upon by projection, developed, and coated with a varnish layer, the colloid and overlying varnish being removed. In a further modification, the application of varnish is omitted, the exposed colloid being further hardened and serving as a printing surface. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
