Abstract
472,298. Liquid - fuel furnaces. SPRENGER, E. Feb. 12, 1937, No. 4206. [Class 51 (i)] In an oil-fired furnace for steam locomotives and the like air for combustion is heated by passing it over loose refractory material and the air supply to burners mounted on the fire door is controlled in accordance with the draught and air supply. As shown in Fig. 1, air for combustion passes from a chamber 5 to the fire-box through layers of firebrick balls 4. Dampers 7, operated by hand; control the admission of air to the chamber 3. Air entering the chamber 5 deflects more or less counterweighted flaps 8 interconnected by a rod 11 and connected by a system of rods and levers 12 ... 17 to a shaft 29, Fig. 2, provided with an eccentric 30 embraced by eccentric straps 31 which actuate valves 32 controlling the supply of oil from the chamber 19 to the burners 3. The shaft 29 is also actuated in accordance with the exhaust steam pressure and the pressure of steam jets from a blower pipe. For this purpose, exhaust steam from the blast pipe 45 and steam from the blower 59 act respectively on plate 48 and cone 60 and transmit motion through lever 52 and a system of rods and levers 53 ... 58 to the shaft 29. Additional burners 44 may be arranged at the rear of the fire-box and the oil supply may be heated by steam in multitubular apparatus.
