iBe it known that I, CHARLES A. I-Ixu- MEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cillliurning Locomotive-Furnaces, of which the fol lowing is a specificatie-n.
This invention has relation to specific improvements in that type of locomotive furnaces such as is illustrated and described in my United States Letters Patent No. 882,756 entitled oil burning steam boilers, and granted to me on the 24th day of March, 1908.
In the above described patent the hydrocarbon burners were oppositely disposed as in this construction, but no provision was made whereby a single burner could be operated to its maximum capacity without in jury to the iirebox or to its oppositely disposed burner.
It is of the objects of this invention to provide a i'lovel disposition of the burners so that a single burner may be operated to .its fullest capacity without injury to the iirebox or to the burner that is oppositely disposed therein, and to also provide for carelessness displayed by operators in turning ofi' the fuel supply to one burner while the other is in operation.
A further and important object is to previde a construction in which bot-h burner iiames are supplied from a single air admission means, thus enabling` a contraction of the brick pan longitudinally and effecting thereby a saving in space and economy in brick pan construction.
In the acco-mplishment of the above objects I preferably employ a pair of oppositely disposed hydrocarbon burners located at opposite ends of the firebox, preferably outside thereof, the firebox being lined with a refractory material and provided with a llame deflecting or impinging wall, which is designed to protect one of the burners when the other is operating at its fullest capacity. Provision is made for admitting air directly to the burners, as well as a single air admission means for the burner flames.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the tirehox of a locomotive boiler, illustrating an application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings the inside firebox or combustion chamber 5 is of usual construction, being closed at the top by a crown sheet 6 and surrounded by water jackets T, the bottoms of which are closed by the usual mud ring S. The outside shell 9 of the chamber 5 is connected to the waist 10, through which the tubes 11 pass from sheet 12 to the smoke stack (not shown) at the front end of the boiler. Chamber 5 is closed at the bottom by a sheet or plate metal brick pan 13, and corresponds in general form to the ash pan of locomotive boilers in which fuel of ay solid type is consumed. Ian 13 is provided with a metallic bottom plate 1i which extends from the rear end of the lirebox forwardly approximately the entire length thereof, where it is bolted or otherwise secured to a vertically disposed plate 15 which extends upwardly from plate 14e and forms a backing for a deilecting or flame impinging wall 1G. Plate 17, which is bolted or otherwise secured to vertical plate 15, forms a closure for that part of the iirebox that lies beyond plate 1l. Plate let .is provided with a rectangular opening 1S, over which is mounted a perforated casting 19, and the upper face of this casting lies flush with the upper faces of the-lire brick 2O with which the pan 13 is preferably lined.
Bolted or otherwise secured to the under face of plate 14 is a sheet metal air inlet box 21, the rear vertical wall of the box being open to the atmosphere, a damper 22 being provided, which is controlled from the cab of the engine in a suitable manner (not shown). By the provision of this damper the air admitted to the air inlet box may be efliciently controlled. This method of taking the main air supply from the bottom through perforated castings is essentially the same in all respects as that construction described and illustrated in my heretofore mentioned patent, it preventing, as in that construction, the entrance of an excessive or undue amount of cold air to the combustion chamber, and at the same time retards the volume of air entering thereinto and enables the fireman of the locomotive to control the admission of air to the combustion chamber most effectively. The air, as it enters through the perforations, becomes heated from the operation of the burners and expands, heating it to a high tempera ture, so that it will readily form a union with the gases, that are being consumed within the combustion chamber. The entrance of air through the perforations in the bottom plate raises the burner flames and prevents a tendency to drag.
It will be noted upon an inspection of F ig. l of the drawings that the air is admitted to the combustion chamber through the inlet box 2l which is located between the two oppositely disposed burners. This disposition of the inletbox represents one of the distinctive and controlling features of my invention as sufficient air is admitted to the burner flames when both burners are in operation, and when only one burner is operating the damper may be regulated and controlled so that the requisite amount of air for a single burner is only fed thereto.
At the front and rear end of the fire box 13 are arches 23, 24, and centrally located 'beneath each arch and on the outside of the fire box are hydrocarbon burners 25, 2G, of usual construction arranged to project their flames toward each other, through air inlets 27, Q8, formed in the walls of the fire box below the arches'.l
By the above described construction it will be observed that by contracting the length of the brick pan and only utilizing a single main air supply of air for both burners, that the efiiciency of the boiler is greatly enhanced as well as economizing in the construction thereof.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a locomotive furnace, of a fire box provided with a transversely disposed flame deflecting wall, means for delivering hydrocarbon liames from the front and rear of the fire box toward each other into the lire box, means for establish.- ing a draft of'air into the fire box adja.- cent the flame delivering means, an air admission means in the bottom of the fire box adjacent to and under the meeting point of the flames, and means located beneath said air admission means for controlling the volume of air admitted therethrough.
2. The combination with a locomotive furnace, of a fire box having a refractory lining on its bottom and sides, the bottom of said fire box being constructed so as to form a transversely disposed flame deflecting wall, of oppositely disposed hydrocarbon burners located at the front and rear end of the fire box, said burners being disposed in'different horizontal planes and discharging their flames toward each other, the flame of one burner impinging against said deflecting wall, means for establishing a draft of air into` the lire box adjacent the hydrocarbon burners, an air inlet in the bottom of said lire box adjacent to and under the meeting point of the flames, a metallic casing having an opening therein disposed under said air inlet, and means for controlling the volume of air admitted therethrough.
