Abstract
472,275. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and ALDINGTON, J. N. March 20, 1936, No. 8379. [Class 39 (i)] A vapour lamp has thermionic electrodes, a glass envelope and a quartz tube 6 which extends at least between the electrodes and has its ends tapered to conform with the tapered ends of the vessel. The quartz tube may fit the envelope as closely as mechanical irregularities will allow. Each main electrode 5 consists of a helix of coiled tungsten wire which encloses a core of alkaline earth and embraces at one end the molybdenum wire 3 to which it is spotwelded. The tube 6 may be extended so that it is virtually closed by the leading-in wires or by the pinches and is provided with partitions 7 ; it maintains the temperature of the seals. During operation, excess mercury is present and serves to protect the seals. The internal surface of the ends of the envelope may be platinized. One or more starting electrodes 9 may be provided. The lamp may be mounted within a transparent or translucent envelope which is evacuated or filled with hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen or a mixture of gases.
