Abstract

472,183. Discharge apparatus. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., ALDINGTON, J. N., and OAKLEY, P. D. April 9, 1936, No. 10538. [Class 39 (i)] A gas or vapour rect ifier has a thermionic cathode, which is heated solely by the discharge, and an insulating screen is arranged between the anode and cathode so that no electron can travel in a straight line from one electrode to the other. A rectifier has a filling of mercury and argon at 5 mms. and a cathode which consists of a tungsten coil or coiled coil 2 surrounding a core 3 of rare earths. A cylindrical nickel anode 7 is supported by wires 8 spot-welded to a bridge 9 and electrical connection to the anode is effected through a wire 10 spot-welded to a bridge 13 which is arranged at right-angles to the bridge 9 and is welded to the anode. The wires may be covered with glass tubes or insulating coatings and may be connected to contacts on an outer jacket filled with hydrogen A glass or quartz shield 11 is secured to the wall of the rectifier through a flared portion. An auxiliary electrode in the form of a tungsten coil 5 is connected to the anode through a resistance. Springs are adapted by means of screws to grip the rectifier and to engage at their ends the wall of the outer jacket.
