Abstract
471,891. Infantry guns. COLEMAN, C. J. Jan. 10, 1936, No. 853. [Class 119] To enable a gun to discharge moderately heavy projectiles without danger or discomfort when the gun is fired from the shoulder, the gun barrel a, provided. with a breech-block c is slidably fitted into a tube f, a firing-pin x is arranged in the breech-block, a trigger l is mounted on the tube f, and means such as a rod k is provided to operate the firing-pin when the trigger is pulled. The tube and the barrel are preferably tapered down towards the front. The barrel is normally retained in the tube by a spring catch h, which yields to the recoil when the shot is fired ; the gun barrel is then ejected rearward from the tube, which is thus relieved of heavy shock. A pistol grip or a butt i is provided on the tube to facilitate the holding of the tube over the shoulder of the marksman. The trigger l is controlled by a spring t, and may be locked at safe by a catch m. The rod k is cocked against a spring r by a handle kl, and has a collar s for engagement by the trigger. When the rod is released by the trigger, its rear end enters the breech-block and strikes one arm of a lever v pivoted at w, and the firing-pin x, which is on the other arm of the lever, fires the cartridge d. The firing-pin is normally held in the retracted position by the action of a spring y on the lever v. The breech-block c may be provided with a buffer, which cushions the shock when the barrel strikes the ground after ejection from the tube. The buffer shown comprises a cylinder 2 containing a coiled spring 3 and formed with a vent 4 covered by a spring flap 5 having a small vent 6. The flap lifts to allow quick escape of air when the spring is compressed, and the small vent 6 allows a slow re-entry of air, preventing a quick return of the spring. The cylinder 2 may be connected to the barrel by a bellows 7, which keeps the parts enclosed to prevent entrance of dirt. The cylinder 2 may be connected to the tube by a chain to prevent complete separation of the parts. A tubular extension may be screwed to the cylinder 2 and its rear end formed with a cupped flange to roll on the ground and to support the gun when firing at high elevation, for example against aircraft.
