Abstract

<PICT:0471783/III/1> For effecting chemical or physical reactions between a liquid and a gas the reactants are fed in counter-current through a column 1 divided into sections, each of which contains a mixing device 12 arranged below the level of liquid in the section. The reactants enter each section at a point near the mixer and are formed into a gas-in-liquid dispersion which is separated in the portion of the section remote from the mixer from which the gas and liquid are separately withdrawn. The partitions may have conical portions as shown with gas and liquid outlets at 8, 9 respetively. Additional inlets for further reactants may be provided as at 6, and sampling taps 16 may be fitted to each section. The Specification describes the application of the invention to the formation of precipitates, such as calcium carbonate from milk of lime and carbon dioxide, to the washing of gases, and to the aeration of liquids.
