Abstract

471,008. Deep-well pumps. PATTERSON, E. W. July 22, 1936, No. 20344. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a beam-operated deep-well pump the beam 24 is connected at one end to the pump rods by a flexible connection 26 and at the other end is pivoted on a spindle 19 supported by beams 17. The latter at their lower ends carry a spindle 18, which is pivoted in a beam 13. The beams 17 are normally secured in the vertical position by tie-rods 20, but can be swung to the position shown in dotted lines, in order to leave the well-head clear. The beam 24 is oscillated by connecting-rods 45 from gear-wheels 40 on a spindle 41, which is carried by a bearing on the beam 13. The gear-wheels 40 are driven from an electric motor 28 through a belt 37, reduction gearing 36 and chains 44. The load on the beam 24 is balanced by air pressure in a cylinder 51, which is supplied with compressed air from a reservoir 68 through a pipe 69 and the hollow piston-rod 60 of the piston 59. The cylinder is pivoted to the beam while the piston-rod is attached to a cross-head 71 having trunnions supported in bearings on the bed-plate. A constant pressure is maintained in the reservoir 68 by a motor-driven compressor 78. The skirt of the piston has an internal groove 64 from which lubricant, picked up from an annular space 57 in the cylinder, passes through radial holes to a groove on the exterior of the piston.
