470,781. Brakes for steering-wheels. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S. Feb. 21, 1936, No. 5234. [Class 103 (i)] Relates to operating mechanism for brakes on vehicle steering-wheels, of the kind in which a pair of shoes are separated by a wedge or plunger e disposed between the shoe ends and movable at right angles to the plane of the back plate c of the brake. In Fig. 1, the plunger slidable in a housing d on the back plate and within the drum a is operated by a lever m, pivoted on the housing and connected to the pedal-operated rod r by a ball joint q located substantially in the steering axis g so that interference with the brake operation by movements of the wheel is prevented. Where the brake is required to be operated also by a hand lever, when the vehicle is stationary, a cable l from this lever may be connected directly to the plunger. In another arrangement a lever pivoted at its lower end on the exterior of the back plate is connected by a link to the plunger, and is bent over the drum to a point lying in the axis g where it is connected to the operating rod. The plunger may instead be disposed below the wheel axis. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement in which the operating rod is connected to a stud projecting radially from the inner end of the plunger.
