Abstract

470,410. Filling bottles &c. BROADHURST, S. F., and ALBRO FILLERS & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Feb. 8, 1936, No. 3938. [Class 125 (ii)] In a suction bottling- machine having an interceptor between the filling head and the pump, a non - return valve is arranged between the filling head and the interceptor, and a second non- return valve arranged between the interceptor and and the main supply container, a control valve being provided by means of which, after the filling operation, compressed air is supplied to the interceptor to blow the trapped material through the second non-return valve into the main supply container. The control valve is preferably arranged to have two positions, in one of which the receptacle is filled under suction, and in the other, the interceptor is cleared. A machine adapted for use with powder comprises a supply 3, Fig. 1, from which powder passes to the filling head 1 and receptacle 69 mounted on a platform 4 connected to the cylinder 7 so that the table can be raised pneumatically. An air pump 11 has a suction chamber 13 and a pressure chamber 15. With the control valve 18 in the position shown, see also Fig. 12, suction is applied to the port 22 and cylinder 7 to raise the bottle into contact with the filling head 1, and to the port 19, pressure reducing valve 47, powder trap 43, and filling head 1. The filling head, Fig. 7, has a rubber cushion 30, a powder supply tube 36, and a filter 37 leading to passages 40, 41. By applying suction at 41, as above, the air bottle is partly evacuated and powder drawn in. When the bottle is full, the control valve 18 is rotated, by foot pedal, to the position shown in Fig. 11, whereby ports 21 and 22 are opened to atmosphere so that the vacuum is broken and the bottle lowered, and pressure is applied to port 19, pipes 64, 65 to the powder trap 43. The trap 43, Fig. 6, contains a filter 44 and non-return valve 42, so that air pressure at 45 causes any trapped powder to pass via 46 through the non-return valve 63 into the supply 3 ; the excess air passes through the filter 61 and 3-way cock 60 to the atmosphere. The supply 3 is provided with a mechanical agitator, and may be replenished by dipping the pipe 71 into a bulk supply, turning the cock 60 through 90‹ and operating the control valve 18 to fill a bottle ; a partial vacuum will thereby be created in 3 and powder drawn in through 71 ; a vacuum relief valve 72 prevents the partial vacuum in 3 becoming too high. The pressure reducing valve 47, Fig. 5, is adjustable by the hand wheel 52. A safety valve 70 is provided on the pressure chamber 15.
