Abstract

470,351. Automatic control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DUNHAM, C. R. Feb. 15, 1936, Nos. 4643 and 7524. [Class 38 (iv)] - Frequency; e.m.f.-Comprises an arrangement in which a D.C. circuit is supplied from an A.C. circuit through a transformer operating at saturation and a full wave rectifier. The material used for the core of the transformer is of the kind which saturates at a very low value of magnetizing force such as, e.g. that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Mumetal." This arrangement enables a constant voltage D.C. to be obtained even though the A.C. voltage varies, and also enables a D.C. voltage which varies with frequency on the A.C. side to be obtained. The second effect is employed in an arrangement shown in the drawing accompanying the second Provisional Specification, for maintaining the speed of a motor generator set constant. A motor 2 fed from a D.C. circuit 24, 25 drives an alternator 1 which supplies an A.C. circuit 14, 15. A saturated transformer-rectifier circuit 3 is connected to 14, 15, and gives a voltage across a resistance 34 proportional to the frequency of the alternator. A further saturated-transformer-rectifier circuit 4 is connected to an A.C. source 47, 48 of constant frequency and gives across a resistance 44 a constant voltage. The resistances 34, 44 are connected in series-opposition in the grid circuit of a valve 5 which controls the operation of a gas-discharge valve 6 connected across part of the resistance 23 in the field circuit of the motor 2. Variation of the frequency will thus alter the bias on the grid of valve 5 and through the valve C alter the field of the motor 2 to effect speed correction. The operating frequency can be adjusted by means of a tapping 49 on resistance 44. Commutation of the valve 6 is effected by means of the secondary 63 of a transformer supplied from an A.C. source. Specification 441,704 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 315,844, 336,716, [both in Class 38 (iv)], and 389,811.
