Abstract

Compositions for removing gums and carbonaceous deposits from internal-combustion engines consist of soap, lubricating oil, and one or more volatile aromatic hydrocarbons; water and a blending agent may be added; the composition may be added to the engine lubricating-oil. Aromatics specified are Edeleanu extract, benzene, toluene, xylene, and homologues. The soap may be potassium, sodium, ammonium, triethanolamine or other organic base oleate, stearate, or palmitate. Lubricants mentioned are motor oils with or without lard oil. Blending agents causing solution of the soap in the oil are butyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, higher alcohols, and glycol mono-butyl ether. In one example, 42,25 litres of Edeleanu extract B.P. 135--195 DEG C., 30 litres of motor oil, 10 litres of lard oil, 0,75 litres of 28 per cent NH3 solution, 3,5 litres of oleic acid, 2,5 litres of water, and 11,0 litres of secondary butyl alcohol are mixed. 1 vol. may be added to 5 vol. of the engine lubricating oil, and the engine run for about 8 hrs. with this mixture in the crank case.
