Abstract

In the extraction of alumina from clay, kaolin, bauxite, &c., the initial material is intimately mixed with sufficient sulphuric acid to form a paste and the latter is subjected in the form of a thin layer, say 20--30 mms. thick, to a continuous thermal treatment to raise its temperature progressively to 300--450 DEG C. The heat is applied to the upper free surface of the layer of paste, and the treated mass then lixiviated to bring the aluminium and ferric sulphates formed into solution from which silica is removed by filtration. To remove iron, the solution is made basic as by adding carbonate of lime, an oxidizing agent such as a persalt is added, and the colloidal ferric oxide formed coagulated by the addition of SnO2 which is preferably added in the form of stannic sulphate.
