Abstract

469,951. Polishing glass. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., and GRIFFIN, J. H. Feb. 5, 1936, No. 3468. [Class 60] In apparatus for polishing flat glass on both sides or surfaces simultaneously, the tools are arranged so that one set operates on one side, and the other set on the other side of another portion of the glass strip, means being provided opposite each set for supporting the strip against the pressure of the tools in that set. The strip 1, driven by rollers 3, is ground by grinding tools 2 opposite each other, and after leaving the tools 2 is washed, to remove sand, and passes over polishing tools 5, and then under tools 7. Whilst over the tools 5, the strip is supported by a roller bed 4, and, whilst under the tools 7, by a roller bed 6 ; the rollers may be idle or may be driven, and a driven belt may pass between the roller beds and the strip, in which case the rollers 3 are omitted. In a modification, Fig. 2, the strip is supported over the tools 5 by tables 8 moved along a guide 9 by rack gearing 12, 13, each table, as it emerges from the guide, passing on to an elevator 15 whereby it is placed on a runway 16 and moved to the elevator 17 which lowers it on to the strip, where it is pushed forward, by a hydraulic pusher 19, again to move along the guide 9; similar tables are used for supporting the strip whilst being polished on the upper surface. The tables may be linked together to form an endless chain, being supported by guides or rollers when supporting the strip.
