Abstract

Yarns containing both artificial and natural fibres are subjected to a treatment with steam before being woven or otherwise associated together to form a fabric. Preferably, the steam treatment is carried out just prior to the weaving, knitting, warp knitting or other fabric forming operation so that this operation is effected while the yarn is in a warm moist condition. The artificial fibres may be of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester, ethyl cellulose or other cellulose ether. Filaments of organic cellulose derivatives may be obtained by dry or wet spinning methods and they may contain dyes, lakes, de-electrifiers, pigments, lubricants, fillers plasticizers, and sizes. The filaments may be cut or broken to staple length and mixed or doubled with fibres or yarns containing wool, cotton, flax, or silk. The mixed yarns may be formed into cones, bobbins, cheeses, or spools, and these are placed in a chamber filled with steam. The steam may be wet or dry and at atmospheric or raised pressure. If desired, the steam may be forced or sucked through the yarn packages. Steam treatment may be carried out just after twisting the yarn and again just before forming the yarn into fabric. In an example, yarn containing cellulose acetate and wool is spooled and subjected to wet steam. It is then warped. A similar yarn is steamed for a shorter time and woven into the warp as a weft. The steam treatment renders the wool and the whole yarn more pliable, tends to set the twist, and facilitates weaving.
