Abstract
<PICT:0347241/IV/1> <PICT:0347241/IV/2> Artificial filaments in the form of cakes, produced by the centrifugal or pot spinning method, or in the form of bobbins produced by the bobbin or parallel method are used in a warping frame for the production of warps, or in a knitting machine or loom for direct conversion into fabric. The filaments are washed, after-treated, softened or sized, and dried in the manner described in Specification 311,391 which obviates the step of skeining or hanking. For centrifugally spun filament, a carrier or sleeve d, which is preferably flexible, is inserted in the cake so that it projects from each end and enables the cake to be used directly for knitting or weaving. The sleeve d may, as shown, be inserted in the perforated sleeve b used in the production of cakes according to the method described in Specification 311,391, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], or may be inserted in the cake after the sleeve b is removed, and serves also as a protection for the ends of edges of the cake when strung on a rod for drying, and may be used during rewinding in accordance with the method described in the prior Specification. A support for the cake in circular looms, stocking-knitting machines, warping frames or shuttleless looms comprises a wooden disc e with a soft washer g of felt or hide which prevents entanglement of the filament with the base of the cake if unwinding is interrupted, and contact of the filament with the upper end of the tube during unwinding prevented by a smooth or polished tray h. The disc and washer facilitate transport; additionally for this purpose a similar disc and washer k, l may be placed on the top of the cake as shown in Fig. 4, and the whole packed in a box m. For untwisted or "slack" filaments produced by the bobbin method, large perforated bobbins, for example of 120 mm. diameter and 200 mm. length, are used which, after treatment of the material thereon, as described in Specification 311,391, are mounted on supports similar to the supports e in, for example, a shuttleless loom. This non-twisted yarn may be passed through a solution, such as glue, gelatine or oil emulsion, which serves to hold the filaments together in their passage from their support while being formed into fabric.
