Abstract

469,419. Fluorescent screens. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., BRETT, G. F., and BANKS, G. B. Jan. 24, 1936, No. 2356. [Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XL] The fluorescent screen of a cathode-ray tube is deposited on a thin electrically conductive layer through which the image can be viewed, loss of light by absorption and reflection in the layer being reduced by forming the layer of such material and thinness that its colour, when viewed by transmitted light, approximately matches that of the fluorescent light. A thin gold layer may be deposited by evaporation in vacuo, sputtering or chemically on the end wall of the tube before a screen of willemite fluorescing greenish-blue is deposited. An electric connection is provided to maintain the layer at a high positive potential, and may be made by a platinum wire fused through the wall or by depositing the gold layer so as to overlap a silvering on the envelope of the tube. In a modification, the gold and willemite are applied to a thin mica disc folded or bent for introduction through the neck of the tube, the gold being applied in liquid form and the mica treated to drive off organic matter. A wire drawn through a hole in the tube is attached to nickel foil clipped to the edge of the mica to make contact with the gold.
