468,489. Hand wheels. DOVER, Ltd., and DOVER, J. A. Oct. 1, 1936, No 26664. [Class 80 (iv)] A vehicle steering-wheel has a boss adapted to be mounted rigidly on the end of a steering column and a rim which is adjustable axially with respect to the boss, the rim being connected to the boss by two or more pivoted telescopic spokes. The boss 11 is connected to the rim 12 by three or more telescopic spokes, each comprising a rod 14 hinged to lugs 17 on the boss and entering a sleeve 15 hinged to the rim 12. A return spring 34 may be inserted between the rod 14 and a plug 36. The hinge portion of each rod 14 is formed on its underside with teeth forming a portion of a pinion 18 adapted to be engaged by teeth on a ring 19. This ring is adapted to be pressed against the pinions 18, to lock them, by a screwed collar 20 threaded on the boss and provided with spring plungers 23 engaging a groove in ring 19 to ensure smooth operation. To adjust the rim 12, the collar 20 is unscrewed to separate the teeth when the rim 12 may be adjusted by pushing or pulling, the spokes meanwhile telescoping and pivoting. After adjustment, the collar is screwed up and the pinions 18 locked. In Fig. 4, the teeth 18 on each of the rods 14 engage a rack-like surface on a block 25 which is movable in an eccentric slot in a plate 27 rotatable by a lug 28. Rotation of this plate causes the blocks to move radially and rotate the spokes about their pivots. After adjustment, locking is effected by a screwed ring 20. In a further modification, the teeth 18 are replaced by a lug engaging the eccentric arcuate slot in the plate 27, the locking being effected by cam-headed levers bearing against a disc washer under the plate. The locking devices described above may be replaced by locks on the telescopic portions of the spokes, e.g. leaf-spring and pin. The spokes may be made flexible by providing clearance between each rod 14 and sleeve 15 and inserting therein a helical spring or a rubber or fluid cushion.
