Abstract
467,391. Regulating air supply to furnaces. SCHMIDT'SCHE HEISSDAMPF-GES. Sept. 25, 1936, No. 26112. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1935. [Class 51 (i)] In a furnace with a rotary or stationary circular grate in which the solid fuel moves during combustion from the point of introduction to a zone where combustion is complete, the space beneath the grate is divided by vertical partitions into stationary sector-shape air chambers connected in parallel to a hollow space surrounding the furnace for preheating the air for combustion, such air being led to the air chambers through openings controlled by dampers. As shown in Fig. 1, the space beneath the rotary grate 8 is divided into sector-shaped chambers 11 supplied with air from the jacket 14 through openings 15 controlled by dampers 16. Fig. 4 shows a grate formed of upper and lower sections 18, 17, the space below each section being divided by vertical radial partitions into sector-shape compartments 22, 21 to which air is supplied from the jacket 14 through openings 24, 23 controlled by dampers 26, 25. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the space beneath the rotary grate 8 is divided into stationary sector-shape chambers 29 by radial partitions and supplied with air from the jacket 14 and from the atmosphere through openings 15, 34 controlled by dampers 16, 33. The air passes from the sector-shape chambers through openings 32 formed in a horizontal plate 31 to annular chambers 27 formed by partitions 28. Vertical radial partitions are also provided in the chambers 27 extending over the plate 31 and serve to move ashes falling through the grate to the chambers 29 from which they are forced by air or steam from a pipe 36 into the ash delivery 37. In a further modification, six sector-shape stationary chambers are arranged beneath five sector-shape chambers rotating with the grate and separated therefrom by a horizontal partition with radial apertures.
