Abstract

The saponifiable compounds produced by the oxidation of high-molecular aliphatic hydrocarbons are separated from other constituents of the mixture by converting the fatty acids &c. into salts and distilling off the unsaponifiable constituents while spraying or atomizing the whole mass, with or without the application of pressure or vacuum. The distillation may be aided by gases and vapours, e.g. superheated steam, carbon dioxide, hydrogen or nitrogen, which may be heated if desired. If desired, the oxidation products may be partially freed from unsaponifiable bodies prior to the distillation, e.g. by converting the fatty acids &c. into salts, adding water and separating the deposited unsaponifiable matter. Extraction may also be used if desired. Low-molecular acid bodies may be removed by treating the crude oxidation product with water or aqueous solutions. The fatty acid salts are obtained in dry pourable powder from and the unsaponifiable matter distilled off may be returned to the oxidation process. The oxidation product consists of fatty acids, alcohols, esters, lactones and unoxidized hydrocarbons.
